Dontavius L. Jarrells

Assistant Minority Leader

As a State Representative and Assistant Minority Leader, Dontavius Jarrells is currently in his second term serving Ohio’s General Assembly in House District 1. The district encompasses the communities of Berwick, Bexley, Bronzeville, Downtown, Franklinton, German Village, Milo-Grogan, and the South Side of Columbus. But his journey to the Ohio House of Representatives began long before his election.

Growing up in the Hough neighborhood of Cleveland, Dontavius witnessed firsthand the struggles that disadvantaged communities face every day. From a lack of affordable housing to limited access to education and essential services, these challenges shaped Dontavius’ worldview and ignited a passion for advocacy and public service.

After nearly a decade fighting for the rights of marginalized communities across Ohio, Dontavius was determined to take his efforts to the next level. As a State Representative, he committed himself to advancing common-sense legislation that would make Ohio a place where everyone is seen, heard, and inspired.

During his first term in office, Rep. Jarrells successfully passed legislation to eliminate discriminatory covenants from property deeds, remove derogatory language from the state’s legal code, and bring millions of dollars back into his district and Franklin County. His tireless dedication to his constituents and commitment to building a better Ohio have made him a respected leader both in and out of the General Assembly.

For Dontavius, the fight for social justice and equity is far from over. He remains steadfast in his commitment to building an Ohio where all residents have access to the resources they need to thrive, and where no one is left behind. This is his story, a story of determination, service, and hope for a better future.
