Monique Smith

Monique Smith has lived on the west side of Greater Cleveland with her husband for 18 years. Born in Ohio and a graduate of The Ohio State University, she and her husband are raising their two children here on the west side and are proud to call this wonderful community their home.

As an active member of the west side community, Monique has volunteered and served the public in many capacities, including as a City Councilwoman representing over 52,000 constituents from 2010 to 2014. Before serving on council, Monique served in Americorps as a young adult and later as a volunteer and member of a number of public boards, commissions and clubs whose missions were to improve the community and encourage participation in the democratic process.

Monique’s concern for her community and the well-being of others comes from her own upbringing as the daughter of a single mother who experienced some of the toughest challenges that families and children can face: threats to safety and stability caused by domestic violence; doing full-time work that still does not meet costs of living and, sometimes, difficulty finding affordable, high-quality child care and housing in areas with good schools.

Monique believes that she is in a position to give back to her community today not just because of her mother’s perseverance through these challenges but also because of the excellent public resources to which she had access.  Great public schools, access to health care, a quality state college education and access to economic opportunities here in Ohio are just of a few of the resources that enabled her to thrive. These are the resources that she will fight for all families to have access to in Ohio so that our entire state can thrive.

In addition to public service, Monique’s resume includes marketing and sales at leading companies in our area. These experiences give Monique the ability to combine the best of private and public sector ideas in her work for the community, which she did as councilwoman and will continue to do as State Representative.

Monique ran for and was elected on November 3, 2020 to be the State Representative for Ohio’s 16th House District, which includes Rocky River, Bay Village, Westlake, North Olmsted and Fairview Park. These are the communities where Monique’s husband, extended family and friends were born, raised and are still proud to call home. Monique is deeply committed to enhancing the qualities that make these cities and our state a great place to call home.
